8th Grade Science

8th Grade Science – Mrs. Carr
Student Expectations and Course Information

This is an overview of what to expect from 8th grade science this year, including student expectations to guide us into what I hope will be an unprecedented year of success. Our goal and guiding belief as a class is that every student can and will succeed in:
  • meeting or exceeding state standards on all assessments and projects
  • maintaining a high level of organization and personal responsibility
  • maximizing their potential as young learners and leaders in our community
Course Content
This course is designed to develop the student’s skill and proficiency in using a scientific method process. This year we continue the implementation of Common Core Standards through the use of literacy to access and analyze current science texts and information. The course content will include:
  •  Science skills (scientific inquiry process, data displays, etc.)
  •  Electricity and magnetism
  •  Atomic Model
  •   Periodic Table of Elements
  •    Earth’s processes (Plate tectonic, earthquakes, volcanoes)
  • Weather/Climate
  • Earth’s Resources and Human impact
  • Classification
  • Natural Selection/Evolution

Student Expectations
It is each student’s right to be in an environment where his/her learning process can take place at the highest level.

Respect                Integrity                        Values                Excellence               Responsibility

Plan to learn and be engaged by. . .

  •           Being seated on time and ready to work - pencil sharpened, quiet at the bell…thanks!
  •           Bringing your ISN (interactive science notebook) EVERY day
  •           Asking questions
  •          Collaborative learning
  •          Having “ah ha’s”
  •          Enjoying your classmates & their contributions w/ respect
  •          Striving for your personal best
  •          HAVING FUN!
Ignorance of school rules & policies is no excuse! You already knew that right?
Dun, Dun, Dunnnnn. . . . . . . . . .   Consequences

                         1.        reminder
                         2.        student/teacher conference
                         3.        phone call home
                         4.        Assistance from Administrator

Organization
Each student in my class will be required to keep an Interactive science notebook (ISN). At  the front of the ISN you will find the state standards broken down to see what we are learning, a table of contents to organize our work and keep track of what and when assignment have been done. The ISN is expected to brought to class EVERY day along with the science textbook.

Grading:
Each six weeks grade will continue into the next until the semester. Grades will be weighted as follows:
      60% Assessments (Tests/Quizzes)
              - assessment can be taken up to 3 times to meet or exceed the standard
40% ISN (Interactive science notebook that we work in daily)

I will be using a 4 point scale to grade both the ISN work and assessments. Grades will reflect progress towards mastery of the core standards. Students’ grades will be based on a proficiency scale of 1-4, with 4 exceeding mastery, 3 meeting the standard and 0 having no mastery of the standard.

In addition, students will be given grades in Citizenship and Work Habits.

O

Student shows a high level of integrity, is respectful to all people and property, and follows all school rules with a smile.  The student is always on time, prepared for class and ready to learn when the bell rings. They are a leader in the class and provide a positive influence.
All homework and class work is complete and has been done with high quality (corrections have been made, neatness, organization, done on time). Work is completed without teacher reminders.

   S

Most of the time the student follows school rules, has a positive influence on the class and works with integrity. The student has minimal (2 per week) warnings on behavior and tardiness. They are respectful to students and staff, and come to class prepared.
Most homework and class work is complete and has been done with average quality or above.  Some missing work due to absences. Work is completed with few teacher reminders.

N

The student’s behavior needs improvement.  There are frequent verbal warnings about behavior, tardiness, being unprepared and non-participation in class activities. The student disregards school/class room rules, talks back, is insubordinate towards adults (teachers, substitute teachers, instructional assistants), has poor attitude, is disrespectful.  The student disrupts classroom learning.
Little homework and/or class work is
Complete or is done poorly (answer is not complete, or not written in complete
sentences, or not explained, some homework
was done late).  Work requires frequent
teacher reminders.

U

The student’s behavior is unacceptable.  Student was given frequent verbal warnings about behavior and/or had their seat changed, was sent to a buddy room and/or the passroom and/or was written a referral. The student demonstrates continuous classroom disruption, negative attitude, argumentative, insubordinate, disrespectful, and/or uncooperative behavior.  Student does not care about their own learning or others’ learning.
Very little homework/classwork is complete.  Homework or class work is copied from another student or is done in class (during review), is incomplete, most work is turned in late.  Constant teacher monitoring is required for completion of work.

Learning:
Pre-assessments will be given before the learning of each standard to help gauge individual student’s knowledge. Alternative assignments will be given for students demonstrating mastery of a given standard. Assignments may be modified to address individual student needs. Students are expected to complete all activities and meet or exceed each state standard. Students will be summarizing their daily learning in their Interactive Science Notebook (ISN).

Absent Work
Students missing activities completed in class will need to make up and complete the work during or after school. You are not excused from it. ALWAYS ASK FOR ABSENT WORK!
